Gallagher-History Mail List

Established in 1998 by the webmaster to encourage the study and propagation of the history of the Clann ÓGallchobhair (Gallagher), the list currently has over 120 members in the USA, Canada, England, Ireland and other countries around the world. List activity is light.

MISSION & CHARTER:  To facilitate the collection and study of the history of the Clann ÓGallchobhair in Ireland and the countries where Gallaghers emigrated. The emphasis will be on clann history prior to the mid 1700s, but will include all history to the present, including all surname spellings. 

ACCEPTABLE TOPICS:  The following discussion topics are encouraged and welcome:

• History of the surname, including etymologies, variant spellings, Gallaghers in history, associations with other clans, and etceteras..
• The retelling of family stories (oral histories), and discussion on individual histories are welcome and invited, though we encourage the contributor to relate the experience to the clann as a whole where possible.
• Legend and myth which affected our families through history, as legend and myth are fundamental to the cohesion of any social structure over the span of generations.
• Administrative discussion relating to the establishment of a clan history society as well as clan historical publications.  We are particularly interested in the eventual publishing of a Clann ÓGallchobhair History, and all thoughts on this subject, including raising the necessary funds for research, editing and publishing, are encouraged.

UNACCEPTABLE TOPICS:  The following topics are not germane to the mission of the list, and are therefore not welcome.  The list owner reserves the right to suspend any member who repeatedly posts such topics.

• SPAM of any sort.
• Individual genealogical queries.  This list is about our surname history, not about genealogy per se, though the two subjects are sometimes inextricably related.  There are several excellent Gallagher surname genealogy lists which we use to post genealogical queries.  Click here to go to the GALLAGHER-L list at RootsWeb.
• List members are thoughtful, classy folks, and refrain from using language that is defamatory in nature.

MODERATOR:  The list is not moderated, and any member can freely post to the list.  The list archives are public, but only members may post to the list.  The list owner is Michael Monroe Gollaher.
